raspberry pi 3 wifi config

April 14, 2017 by ben

Since i own such a magnificent little device as the raspberry pi 3 i like to profit from the built in wifi module. As i tend to do such things not every day let’s write down the needed steps for the wifi config.

There is this file /etc/network/interfaces where we can adjust the basic network config. We have to change the wlan0 config from manual to dhcp in order to get automatic dhcp offers from the router.

sudo vim /etc/network/interfaces

There is a file mentioned in the /etc/network/interfaces where we can put the config in: /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Open this file with vim/nano and add your ssid and password:

sudo vim /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

and insert these lines at the bottom of the file:

network={ ssid="your-wifi-name/ssid" psk="your-wifi-password" }

last step if the config is not picked up automatically is to restart the wlan0 interface:

sudo ifdown wlan0

and enable it again:

sudo ifup wlan0

now you should be able to get a dhcp offer. Look it up with ifconfig and watch after wlan0
